Soapbox time, are ya ready?
Yesterday evening as Ed and I were headed south to check on animals, there stood an abandoned pup in the middle of the road. Just far enough out of town where no one could see him being dumped but too far for him to see houses and know which direction to look for help.
It was all too apparent this guy needed more than food, water and shelter, he needed medical attention and soon! Mange has left him bald about the face and head and no doubt the reason the scumbags decided he wasn’t worthy of their attention. Mange is difficult to deal with, but it can be treated and cured with a bit of patience.
He spent the night in the chicken pen at the farm and he and I made a trip to the vet’s office this morning. We were afraid to treat him for fear of damaging his eyes and we wanted Doc’s opinion before starting on this journey with yet another dog.
The good news is he will be fine, he was standing in the road at the right time cause there is no way either one of us could leave a 3-month-old pup to fend for himself. Heck, we can’t even leave a grown dog alone!
On to the soapbox part; I would dearly love to have every last person on this Earth that has taken the coward’s way out and left a poor, defenseless animal to fend for itself lined up, made to go hungry and thirsty to the point of starvation and dehydration, fed, watered and then start the process all over again! Oh! And let’s make sure it’s either the middle of summer or the dead of winter with not a shade tree or shelter in sight! Harsh? Probably, but that’s the fate of these dogs or far, far worse… at least I’m willing to let them eat and drink!
Warning! Pitiful Pup photo ahead, very hard to look at, but there is something to be thankful for. His body is not affected, it’s only his head, face, neck and a little bit of the front legs. Keep your fingers crossed we get him on the road to recovery fast!
